Welttierschutzgesellschaft e.V. (WTG) is a Germany based registered non-profit organisation. Their vision is a world in which animals are appreciated by people and treated according to their needs and with respect. In their work for animal welfare, WTG focuses on countries and regions with little protection for animals. They aim at improving the situation for animals in the long term by providing veterinary care, supporting animal sanctuaries and through educational work.
WTG has partnered once again with the Cape of Good Hope SPCA to prevent cruelty that so many farm animals suffer at the hands of those who lack the knowledge to properly care for them.
Many farm animals in the Blue Downs area of Cape Town are found to be living in terrible conditions where their primary needs aren’t being met, there isn’t proper drainage or protection from the elements and they live in parasitic conditions and are underfed.
There is no doubt that our farm animals suffer as a result of lack of knowledge.
It’s our mission to ensure that farm animals are treated with compassion and consideration and that emerging farmers are provided the knowledge they need to improve the overall welfare of their animals.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s vision of the future will be achieved by working individually with small groups of farmers to create real change on their farms. We’ll build constructive relationships with these farmers by educating them about farm animal best practices and ensure these improvements are made through practical application.
With the backing and funding of WTG, our Education Department are teaching farmers how to shelter their animals, what to feed them, how to handle them, how to keep them clean, look after their feet, transport them and check their overall condition. We are also teaching disease prevention and giving them the knowledge they require in order to recognise the symptoms of various diseases and when and where to seek help for their animals, should these diseases manifest.
Participating farmers will receive the support and assistance needed to implement positive changes to the husbandry of their farms and health of their animals.
The benefits of this project are twofold; firstly, to provide support to farmers in need through basic training and to ensure correct animal husbandry techniques. Secondly, to prevent cruelty to any farm animals and ensure the humane treatment of farm animals at all times in accordance with the Animal Protections Act 71 of 1962.
