Chains represent freedom when they’re on a bicycle, but when they’re wrapped around the neck of a dog, they symbolise suffering. That’s why we need you to join us in the fight for change.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour’s Team SPCA proudly sponsored by Hills Pet Nutrition, raises awareness for the plight of dogs on chains and supports our dedicated Inspectors who will never stop working to give dogs their freedom back.

Cruelty stinks in every sense of the word, but in Jack’s case, it was literal. Inspector Taljaard smelled him before he saw him—the sickening odour of rot is unmistakable.
He was a ghost in his own home. He was full of parasites, underweight, and the chain around his neck had been there for so long it had become part of him. He had no water, no food in sight, no freedom, no hope, and no escape.
It costs the SPCA between R300 – R1,000 to break just one chain and an additional R2,500 – R5,000 to help one dog heal from an embedded chain injury!

Breaking the Chains: A Life of Solitary Confinement for the Innocent
Chaining a dog is the equivalent of subjecting them to a life of solitary confinement. Deprived of companionship, mental stimulation, and physical activity they endure a daily sentence of loneliness, isolation, suffering and despair. Everyday looks the same, smells the same, is the same and a world beyond their confinement is forever out of reach. There’s no escape from the chain which means there’s no escape from heat, the cold, biting/stinging insects or adversaries.

A deposit of R500 is due when you register and the balance of R2 000 before race day.
If you already have an entry
and want to transfer to Team SPCA, give us your details and we’ll transfer your entry to our charity. You will not need to pay a deposit, but you must commit to raising a total of R2000.
