They are unloved, neglected, starving, sick, injured and sometimes dying – they are the stray animals that will be admitted to our facility in their thousands this festive season.
Every time people like you donate to our work, support us in any way or adopt a pet, you show that you believe that animals deserve a chance, no matter the odds.
That’s exactly what happened with a little Maltese poodle, Mutley Puddles.
She was brought to us as a terrified rescue. Frozen with fear, she barely moved – and for weeks, wouldn’t eat.
It was only a week after she was moved to a quiet ward that she finally took a piece of chicken from Dr Este’s hand … and even started to wag her tail!
Despite Mutley’s progress, there was one big concern … our good doctor was due to go on leave and didn’t want to leave her timid patient. So she decided not to – and adopted Mutley!
Dr Este knew her staff wouldn’t have time to keep hand-feeding Mutley – there were other sick and injured animals to tend to.
And that’s the heartbreaking reality: our intake will almost double over the next few months.

More than 2 000 unwanted animals will stream in over December and January. This is not only shameful – it’s a crisis! A crisis in compassion for the human race and a financial crisis for the SPCA.
