It seemed as if the world was watching with us, in horror, as flames engulfed parts of Cape Town, refusing to relent to firefighters. As the Cape of Good Hope SPCA was part of the disaster risk management team stationed at the Disaster Operation Centre in Goodwood, we were ready to spring into action the moment we were cleared to do so. Our animal hospital, veterinary staff and facilities were also readied to help injured animals.
Although the SPCA Inspectors combed fire-affected areas to search for signs of life, all they found was the charred remains of animals amid mounds of ash. We hope that many animals managed to escape and will eventually return to their usual habitats.
Thanks to our supporters’ generosity, we’re prepared for any future fire and have enough stock of supplies like burn shields and bandages. We also shared supplies with other welfare organisations.
In the event of a fire, if you find an injured animal: place small animals in a covered cardboard box to minimise stress and call our emergency hotline immediately. If the animal is larger, confine them to a closed area if safe to do so and call our hotline on 083 326 1604. This number is strictly for animal emergencies.
