We tried our best but we lost one today. One loving heart stopped beating #chainedtopain. We know we can’t save them all – but reminding himself of that isn’t helping Cadet Inspector Rudi Philander today.
He responded to a distress call from Belhar extension 3 earlier this week and on his arrival found a man desperately trying to give water to a dog lying on the ground. The dog was so thin and so weak that he wasn’t even able to lift his head. The only sign that he was alive was his wagging tail and that was enough to make a grown man cry. This boy had a rope around his neck and had been restrained somewhere, his owner we guess had decided it would be very inconvenient to have a dog die on his property and had simply sent him to die on the streets.
We tried so hard, he was immediately put onto a drip and we tried to feed him small quantities of soft food. Starving as he was, he was too ill to eat. His ears were packed full of ticks and they had made him so sick that his blood was almost water. Today we had to realise that his suffering was too great and that it was cruel to keep him alive any longer. The only thing that would ease his pain would be to put him to sleep. But not before he knew he was loved and not before he had a name. We called him Roy.
