Friday, November 4 is a big day for Aviwe Matina and Ayabonga Kobese, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA-sponsored cyclists who are riding in the Wines2Whales mountain bike race in support of animals.
In addition to their race preparations, these two animal lovers have been hard at work with the SPCA’s Inspectors and outreach teams in their home ground of Khayelitsha, where they have helping to educate community members on the need for proper pet care.
Aviwe and Ayabonga helped the SPCA team to dip and deworm almost 290 animals, sterilise 31 pets and take in six unwanted animals. Inspector Mark Syce expressed his appreciation for the two volunteers’ efforts.
‘’They took to this work like ducks to water and quickly learned the skills of dipping and deworming,” said Inspector Syce.
“We also educated countless adults and children about our anti-dogfighting campaign, while also providing practical, immediate help for animals.“
Aviwe and Ayabonga were a huge asset in helping to spread the word about animal clinics in Khayelitsha – many residents didn’t know that help was available for their pets – and they also encouraged community to report animal abuse to the SPCA.
“The community was happy to see the SPCA,” added Inspector Syce. “One lady used her jeans as a leash to bring her dog to be dipped and dewormed. Another guy wheeled his puppies to us in a black bin, so we could give them a health check.
“What an awesome experience! We got meet so many wonderful people and we are so are happy that these fine young men are riding under the SPCA banner. I know they’ll do us proud, just like they have done over the past six weeks during our outreach visits.”

Aviwe and Ayabonga spent more than six weeks working with the SPCA Inspectorate and Inspectors Mark Syce, Rudolph Philander and Lwazi Ntungele; Cadet and Animal Care Assistant Bryan Arendse, Collection Officer and Animal Welfare Assistant Mthunzi Kunene.
From everyone at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, thank you Aviwe and Ayabonga and good luck on your upcoming ride! We’re with you all the way!
The FNB Wines2Whales mountain bike race is more about the journey than the destination, but no matter your inclination, you’re guaranteed a fun-filled, action-packed three days of riding alongside like-minded people.
