This past weekend, 57 runners took on the Two Oceans Marathon, not just as athletes, but as heroes for animals.
Cape Town’s streets were alive with the rhythmic beat of thousands of running shoes and amongst them, were 57 compassionate hearts that matched that rhythm, beating not just with the exertion of the race, but with love for animals too.
38 half marathoners and 19 ultra-marathoners dedicated their race to help animals lead pain-free lives and in the process, raised almost a quarter of a million rand for the work of the SPCA’s animal hospital. These ordinary people, driven by extraordinary compassion, stepped up to make a difference because every animal admitted to our animal hospital needs a hero. And their collective efforts did just that by powering the healing hands at the SPCA Hospital.
To every one of these runners, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your dedication, your passion, and your determination have not only made a significant impact on the lives of countless animals but have also served as an inspiration to us all. Thank you heroes.

Because animals deserve a life free from pain
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s Animal Hospital is the largest of its kind in the Western Cape.
Our hospital is committed to promoting animal welfare, preventing animal overpopulation, and ensuring access to quality veterinary care in under resourced communities. And our services are in high demand!
There are seven hospital wards containing 205 care cages, four outpatients’ consulting rooms, two operating theatres, x-ray facilities, an equipment sterilisation room – in addition to a vaccination and microchipping clinic.
Consists of reception staff; Animal Welfare Assistants, Orderlies, Animal Health Technicians and Animal Nurse and Vets.
During the last financial year, our animal hospital saw a total of 48,223 patients move through our doors. This translates to an average of 132 clinical cases seen per day, or 16.5 animals receiving care every hour.
Our organisation operates 4 Mobile Clinics that deliver primary veterinary care to the heart of communities in need. Via this service, an additional 16,583 animals received timely, essential veterinary treatment regardless of their owners’ financial situations.
5,523 animals were sterilised at our hospital last year making a significant contribution to animal health via humane pet population control.
There’s no doubt that our hospital serves as a lifeline for disadvantaged pet owners.
By providing preventative veterinary treatments and emergency services at welfare rates, we ensure that even those facing financial constraints can access essential healthcare for their beloved pets.
