Your SPCA 67, in Memory of Tata Madiba

You’re invited to spend your 67 minutes in memory of Tata Madiba here at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA and assist the animals in our care!

We’re looking for a group of people who would be willing to get creative (and a little dirty!) for 67 minutes.

While a hands-on approach is always preferable on Mandela Day, the SPCA also welcomes food or gift donations in show of support.

We’ve got options listed below for everyone!

Build A Kennel

You'll have the best time ever building a kennel that we can distribute to animals in need!  Expert assistance on hand and all the materials you need but please bring your own paint.

Assist with re-painting some our perimeter walls and interior walls.

Please bring your own white paint for interior use, blue paint for exterior use and brushes.

Sponsor or bring Oat Hay for our horses and farm animals.

Our Horse Care Unit & Farmyard is in desperate need of oat hay bales for the farm animals in our care. We care for over 80 farm animals at any given time. Feeding them is costly.

Donate and drop off dry cubes for the cats and dogs in our care.

Any brand is welcomed. Also do not forget about our kittens and puppies!

Donate R670 towards sterilising an animal from a disadvantaged area. Sterilisation is the only way we can prevent unwanted litters from being born. Let's take hands and stop the breeding.

Donate warm blankets for animals.  Stormy or Fleece blankets are available from PEP from as little as R39.00

Donate Washing Powder (Auto)

The only thing more important than warm blankets is clean blankets!  Donations of washing powder will help us keep our blankets clean and prevent the spread of disease.

“In light of your inspiration Madiba, our SPCA will continue unabated to strive towards our vision: To someday live in an animal cruelty-free society where all life is equally valued and respected.”

“I always knew that deep down in every human heart, there was mercy and generosity.” – Nelson Mandela, Long Walk To Freedom

SPCA staff joined a human chain that stretched from Gugulethu to Rondebosch in honour of Mandela Day

“A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones.” – Nelson Mandela, Long Walk To Freedom

Mandela Day Madiba with Dog

If a picture could speak a thousand words, then this picture of Madiba with his much loved companion Gompo shows a man whose humanity extended further than to just the human race.

As a patron of the National Council of SPCA’s during his lifetime, the Father of our Nation’s dreams of a just society could never have excluded animals.

In honour of a great man, who instilled in each one of us the determination to pursue a better life for all, please consider joining us as we pursue a better life for animals this Mandela Day.

If you dream of a country free from animal cruelty, please come and pitch in to improve our space, or make a donation in Tata Madiba’s honour.

“We must use time wisely and forever realise that the time is always ripe to do right.” – Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela

Nelson Mandela International Day is an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela and is celebrated on 18 July, the day on which the late former President was born.

It is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world and the ability to make an impact.

“We know it well that none of us acting alone can achieve success. We must therefore act together as a united people, for nation-building, for the birth of a new world.”  – Nelson Mandela

Every year the Cape of Good Hope SPCA are touched by the incredible outpouring of generosity and love exhibited on #MandelaDay.

Here are some memories of past Mandela Days at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA

Admorend Mupasu showed us all the true spirit of Mandela Day when he arrived to donate this gorgeous kennel built with his own two hands.

Admorend, a shack dweller from Samora Machel earns a living by building kennels from wooden pallets and while he may not be a wealthy man, he certainly has a generous heart.

He also managed our kennel building project for us at Mandela Day and ensured that all the kennels that were constructed were sturdy and will serve needy animals well into the future.

If you are looking for a kennel, please look no further than Admorend Mupasu? You will find his kennels for sale (priced from as little as R250.00) on Jakes Gerwel Drive just off the N2 and he can be contacted on 0747233755 for any woodwork or steelwork projects including burglar bars, sliding gates and braais. He would also sincerely appreciate any donations of wood / wooden pallets.

Hammers and saws at the ready – it was all hands on deck at the SPCA Mandela Day Kennel Build – watch these industrious volunteers who came to build a kennel for disadvantaged pets!
Amazing energy and spirit amongst these volunteers!
We extend our gracious thanks to all who live by these principles and all who live in a way that continues the legacy of a kind and compassionate man. A man who we were fortunate to call the Father of our nation.
