For two years, the Tape family lived with a heavy heart, haunted not just by a robbery that took their belongings but also something irreplaceable—their beloved husky-cross, Frost. Of all the things they lost, Frost left a void the family couldn’t fill. Despite their tireless efforts to locate him, their search led nowhere. Even after moving from South Africa to the United States, Hidaaya never stopped worrying about him and hoped that because Frost was microchipped that they would one day be reunited.
Fate, it seems, had a plan. Just as Hidaaya was preparing for a trip back to South Africa, Frost made his way to the SPCA. While no one knows the full story of Frost’s two-year journey, what mattered was that he had finally found safety—and landed in the hands of a team dedicated to reuniting him with his family.
The timing was nothing short of miraculous. As Hidaaya stepped off the plane and set foot on South African soil, Randal Cato from the SPCA was on the phone delivering the news the family had longed to hear – Frost had been found.
Their emotional reunion left us all a little teary-eyed. After years apart, it didn’t take Frost long to recognise the person kneeling before him—his best friend was finally home. We’re honoured to have played a part in bringing closure to the Tape family’s painful chapter and to get a glimpse into the power of love that can bridge even the greatest distances and the longest separations.

Why Microchipping Matters
Frost’s return is a beautiful story, but it also carries an important lesson – microchipping your pet is essential. Without Frost’s microchip, his reunion with the Tape family might never have happened.
Microchipping is the most reliable way to ensure your pet can be identified and returned if they’re ever lost.
This simple, painless procedure involves placing a tiny chip under your pet’s skin, between the shoulder blades. The chip contains a unique ID number that animal shelters, vets, and rescue organisations can scan. Once scanned, the microchip provides instant access to the owner’s contact details, making reunions like Frost’s possible.
Sadly, some well-meaning people find animals on the streets and decide to keep them, unaware that these pets often have loving homes. By doing so, they may unintentionally prevent a family from reuniting with their missing companion. If you come across a stray, please take them to a vet or the SPCA so we can check for a microchip and help them find their way home.
At the SPCA, we are dedicated to helping lost animals return to their families. You can support this mission by microchipping your pets and encouraging others to do the same.
