Kintsugi Dave and the Art of Second Chances

Reading progress

When Dave was admitted to the SPCA he had a horrific burn wound that had stripped his left leg of skin and left him with a raw, painful wound.

He had been found wandering the streets of Delft by a kind and compassionate person who called us for help.

Just as the ancient Japanese art of kintsugi celebrates the beauty in broken things, Dave’s story became one of renewal, healing, and the profound beauty of second chances.

Kintsugi is the craft of repairing cracked pottery by filling the seams with gold, making the piece even more beautiful for having been broken.

This philosophy – finding beauty in imperfection – is precisely what inspired Dave’s new family to give him the name Kintsugi Dave Williams.

His scars, like the golden lines in kintsugi pottery, make him even more beautiful to the family who love him now.

From the moment Dave arrived, our hospital team worked tirelessly not just to treat his terrible burns but to restore his hope in humanity.

His healing wound became a metaphorical golden seam, reminding us that what’s broken can be made whole again, and what’s whole again can become even more beautiful because of the journey it took to get there.

The day Kintsugi Dave found his forever home marked the beginning of a new chapter. His family embraced him not despite his scars but because of them, seeing in him the same beauty that kintsugi teaches us to see in the world.

Dave’s journey reminds us why our work matters so deeply. Every animal that arrives at the SPCA is like a broken piece waiting to be mended, and while we may provide the care and treatment that starts their healing, it’s families like Dave’s who add the final, golden touch.

Kintsugi Dave now thrives in his new home, a living, breathing example of the beauty in imperfection and the power of adoption. His story is proof that every scar, whether visible or hidden, holds a unique and precious story worth celebrating.

Adopt, restore, and be the gold in an animal’s life - because every journey toward healing is beautiful.

By adopting, you too can become part of this beautiful process, offering a second chance to animals in need, and becoming the golden seam that turns brokenness into something extraordinary.

A Gift That Lasts Past A Lifetime

It was a bequest made by the late Val Gorfinkel that enabled our Animal Hospital to receive a much-needed revamp about 16 years ago. That upgrade helped ensure that 40 000 animals received veterinary help during the past year.

Find out how to become an Animal Guardian by leaving a gift for us in your will.
