Side Effects of Pet Vaccinations: Rare But Possible

Reading progress

Vaccinating your pet is an effective way of preventing diseases. However, it should be known that as with any other medicine, it’s possible for some pets to experience an allergic reaction. But it is also important to remember that this is rare and only a small number of animals experience side effects from vaccines, most of which are mild and usually pass within a few days.

Some of the common side effects that your pet could experience shortly after a vaccination include:

• Low energy (lethargy)
• Loss of appetite
• Increased sleeping
• Fever
• Mild swelling around the vaccine site.

Less common side effects include:

• Twitching
• Itchy skin
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Limping.

In very rare cases, your pet can experience a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).

Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction include:

• Swelling any part of the body
• Difficulty breathing
• Cold ears, legs and feet
• Seizures
• An increased heartbeat

If your pet experiences any severe allergic reactions, please take her or him to the vet immediately.

A Gift That Lasts Past A Lifetime

It was a bequest made by the late Val Gorfinkel that enabled our Animal Hospital to receive a much-needed revamp about 16 years ago. That upgrade helped ensure that 40 000 animals received veterinary help during the past year.

Find out how to become an Animal Guardian by leaving a gift for us in your will.
