Surgery for Luke Postponed After Doctor Discovers Massive Infection

Reading progress

The "Luke" Series - Episode 3

Changing the game plan

Luke is sedated and placed under general anaesthesia.  Dr Chatry starts removing the dead skin surgically with the hope to stitch Luke up.

The doctor is left with no choice but to alter the initial strategy to clear Luke’s bite wounds surgically and close up his injuries.  Instead, she finds advancing necrosis under the dead skin which explains why Luke arrived in a collapsed state.

Previous bites left untreated

Luke had sustained previous bites that were left untreated causing the underlying infection to escalate with life-threatening necrotic bacteria.  The infection is so severe that Dr Chatry has to leave Luke with a dressed open wound to drain and treat the infected area before any further surgical intervention can be considered.

Next steps in Luke’s treatment

The open wound is dressed with antibiotic and anti-bacterial ointment then packed with gauze and covered with cotton wool and bandages to drain.  Luke will return to theater in 3 days for a bandage change and checkup on the infection.  In the meantime, Luke is given a strong antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment to help fight the infection.  He spends the next 3 days in ICU with managed pain control.

Just a few weeks after his traumatic escape from dogfighting, Luke remains determined to recover.

A Gift That Lasts Past A Lifetime

It was a bequest made by the late Val Gorfinkel that enabled our Animal Hospital to receive a much-needed revamp about 16 years ago. That upgrade helped ensure that 40 000 animals received veterinary help during the past year.
