Muis, an adult cat from La Rochelle in Bellville got himself stuck in a blocked stormwater drain on Friday. He entered the drain and was too big to turn himself around once he discovered the outlet was blocked with sand on the other side.
His owner returned from work last week to her cat calling for help from inside the drain. She called Cape Town Fire and Rescue as well as the Cape of Good Hope SPCA for assistance to help free Muis who was already in distress from being stuck for an undetermined period of time.

Cape of Good Hope SPCA inspector Mark Syce was first on the scene. “I dug the sand out at the blocked outlet and then secured it with a garden spade,” said Syce. Muis, however, still remained stuck in the stormwater drain leaving Fire and Rescue with no alternative other than to flush him out with the fire hose straight into the hands of Inspector Syce waiting to catch him on the other side.
“It was a great collaboration effort” Syce concluded. Muis was returned safely to his owner’s care unharmed.
He was no doubt pursing his English namesake Mouse when he got himself stuck in the unfortunate tight spot.
