With the support of the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement Department the Animal Control Unit, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA Inspectors descended on illegal hawkers selling chickens on the side of the road in Philippi, Western Cape.
Armed with a Court Order from the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court, SPCA Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse explains how, over several months our Inspectorate would come weekly to this site trying to educate the owners on the humane care and treatment of chickens.
All that has been repeatedly requested is that the chickens are provided with:
1. Drinking water
2. Protection against the elements
3. Humane treatment
“Week in, week out, we work with them, give them warnings, they simply do not comply”.
Watch how the owners quickly started to give them water, a basic need. It is heart-wrenching to watch the thirsty chickens all clamour around the hastily placed water receptacles in the hot sun beating down on them just before noon.
The chickens have all been removed and the SPCA will be laying charges according the Animal Protection Act.
Inspector Pieterse says this is not the first time we are removing chickens from this site, and that if it is not the last time, we will continue laying criminal charges until these hawkers learn to care for the animals’ most basic needs for water, shelter and humane treatment.
