When Inspector Lee Prins looked over a wall, he saw a life fading away. Hulk, once a mighty Boerboel, was skin and bone, starved of food, affection, and stimulation. With law enforcement by his side and a magistrate’s warrant in hand, Inspector Lee stepped in.
Thanks to your support, that decisive moment became the end of neglect and the beginning of a second chance.
At our Animal Hospital, Hulk began his recovery. Measured diets, supplements and careful monitoring built his strength, while vaccinations, sterilisation, and parasite treatments secured his health.
But mending his heart took more. Our on-site behaviourist, Nicole, with the help of our wonderfully patient volunteers, showed Hulk how to play, trust, and love again. Each wag of his tail showed progress. And when Hulk learned to “give paw”, offering it so freely despite all he had endured, it was the clearest sign of his forgiving heart, restored.
He had to be brave too, because as a large, senior dog, we knew he would spend longer in our kennels than others.
And he did.
Days stretched into weeks and then months and still, he remained gentle, greeting visitors with slobbery kisses with that great big paw ever ready to be given to anyone who would take it.
Finally his family came. Breed-experienced and open-hearted, they saw beyond Hulk’s size and age. And suddenly, Hulk was no longer a dog waiting, he was a best friend.
This is the moment your gift turned into giggles, adventures, and the bond of a lifetime.
Every child deserves a dog like Hulk. A dog to walk beside them, leash loose, as they discover the world together. A dog who leans in quietly on the balcony while a boy dreams his first big dreams.
A dog who listens without judgment, who never tells secrets, who makes a child feel safe.
A dog who becomes the first and best customer of two little girls playing hairdresser, rolling over as if to say, “Go on then, make me pretty.”
This is what a dog gives a childhood, adventure, companionship, laughter, loyalty, love. Hulk is giving all of this and you made it possible.
But here is the truth: R7 143 per pet.
That is what it costs to bring a dog like Hulk from rescue to rehoming. It covers clean blankets, food, veterinary care, behaviour support, daily love, and lifelong post-adoption follow-up.
We do not raise funds by rehoming animals. We need to raise funds to do it.
To the family who opened their home, and to every supporter who gave or shared Hulk’s story, thank you. Thank you for helping him to be seen, for keeping the care steady, the blankets clean, the bowls filled, and the treatment ready until his family found him .
If you grew up with a dog, you know what Hulk is giving now. Walks that feel like adventures, quiet company at a window where big dreams begin, small hands with a brush and a giggle, a friend who keeps every secret and steadies every fear.
That is the gift you created for this family and for Hulk.
