FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What causes people to organise these dog fights?
Aside from satisfying a deviant and violent bloodlust, cowardly individuals who engage in this criminal activity transfer their dogs success onto their own identities. A winning dog will raise an owners “street cred”, elevate their egos, earn them money and breed them more victims.
What can one do when they witness the fights?
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA is committed to putting an end to dog fighting but we do need the help of our communities in identifying both these suspects and any other individuals involved. Please stand with us and step up to stop dog fighting by reporting any of the following;
Break sticks – These are flat bars of any material that taper to a point and are used to pry apart a dog’s mouth in order to break up a fight.
Makeshift fighting “pits” or square structures that may have blood evidence on the floors and walls.
Scarred dogs, especially pit bulls. Fighting scars can be found on the face, front legs, hind legs and thighs. Puncture wounds, swollen faces and mangled ears are also tell-tale signs of fighting.
Dogs tied down with heavy chains
The presence of multiple unsterilized, animal aggressive, unsocialised dogs.
Look out for chains, ropes or spring-poles hanging from beams with various items attached to them (such as tyres, or live/dead cats or puppies in bags) – in training, the dog “locks on” to the items with its jaws and hangs there for long periods, which builds strength in the jaw and neck muscles.
If you happen to witness a dog fight in progress and it is safe to do so, please try to obtain video footage that shows both the fight taking place and the faces of those involved. If you are able to establish where the individuals involved reside that would enable swift action by the SPCA both to get animals to safety and to effect arrests on the suspects with the help of the police. Reports may be made anonymously by calling 0217004158/9 during office hours or 0833261604 after hours. Reports can also be made our digital report cruelty link here
