Yesterday the Cape of Good Hope SPCA rescued two (2) badly emaciated dogs and seven (7) puppies from a Villiersdorp teacher. The matter was investigated by Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse, who had to approach the Caledon Magistrates Court for a court order in terms of the Animals Protection Act to confiscate the dogs after the owner and his family threatened Chief Inspector Pieterse and refused to co-operate.
The Overberg Animal Welfare Society (AWS) accompanied Chief Inspector Pieterse on this matter as they originally dealt with the matter and did not receive any assistance from the local police to execute a court order that was previously issued to remove the dogs.
The two (2) Boerboel type dogs were found to be in extremely poor condition. Upon Chief Inspector Pieterse’s arrival, the dogs did not have access to food or water. The owner was instructed to give the dogs water. The dogs were so thirsty that they drank non-stop. The owner was also instructed to provide the female Boerboel with food and she gobbled all the food up. The puppies were found to be infested with fleas and also not in good health.
The two dogs and seven puppies were brought back to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA and were examined by our veterinary team. The dogs are currently receiving treatment.
“It is very disheartening that these dogs belonged to a teacher. Teachers are supposed to teach our children kindness and compassion. Abusing your own animals does not create a kinder world and certainly does not teach kindness and compassion.“ said Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA
Charges of animal cruelty will be laid against the Villiersdorp teacher in terms of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.
