Weather Alert: We urgently need donations, blankets and food for rescued animals

Reading progress

We have been inundated with calls regarding animals left without shelter in this weather and flooding in informal farming areas. Unfortunately, it’s about to get much worse.

The South African Weather Service has informed the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre that further disruptive rain and damaging winds are expected today, Tuesday, 9 July 2024. An orange level 6 warning is in effect. Further rain will lead to large scale flooding and possible mudslides, exacerbating the impacts of the inclement weather we’ve already experienced. We are expecting these hazardous conditions to displace pets and farm animals who will be in desperate need of rescue and warmth.

Our Inspectors are working closely with the City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre, and we have deployed teams to all areas currently in crisis. We are uplifting animals left exposed to the elements and are en route to Macassar with trailers to rescue horses and cattle while the area is still accessible.

We’re actively seeking out the animals on chains, in the areas where flooding is imminent and those without shelter.  The volume of animals in need is alarming and we have to prioritise those at greatest risk for now.

Please report animals in distress by calling 0217004158/9. We will be working throughout the night to rescue animals in distress.
We urgently need donations, oathay for horses, horse blankets, blankets for cats and dogs, and dry dog and cat food to support the influx of animals.

Wild animals are also being displaced too and we have had the unseasonal admission of a puff adder, stabbed with a hot poker while trying to flee a flooded error for safer, higher ground. Please be on the lookout for any animals in distress and call our team who are equipped to deal will all animals in distress, including grumpy puff adders.
