World Animal Day is an international day of action to raise the status of animals and improve their welfare and is celebrated annually on October 4, the feast day of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. First held in 1925,World Animal Day has since grown to encompass all kinds of animal life and is widely celebrated in countries throughout the world. The day is commemorated for caring, protecting, rescuing and spreading awareness to stop animal cruelty.

The aim of World Animal Day is to celebrate animal life in all its forms as well as humankind’s relationship with the animal kingdom. The theme this year is “forest and livelihoods: Sustaining people and planet” Through increased awareness and education we can create a world where animals are always recognised as sentient beings and full regard is always paid to their welfare.
