Gerry and Bella called out the heroes within our supporters

When German shepherd, Bella was brought to the SPCA Animal Hospital with cuts to her face, owner Gerry Brand was distraught – not only from concern for his dog, but because he couldn’t afford the cost of treatment, even at welfare rates.

As a security patrol officer, Gerry had just had his uniform costs deducted from his salary, leaving him with little left over to help his beloved Bella. She needed to be admitted for sedation, shaving and possibly, stitches. Thanks to SPCA donors who support the animal hospital, we waived the fee for Bella. But we weren’t prepared – and neither was Gerry – for the incredible show of support after Gerry and Bella’s story captured the hearts of our social media followers.

Deborah Boltman read Gerry’s story and, acting in memory of her family’s beloved dog, Tusk who had passed away suddenly just a week earlier, Deborah offered to cover Bella’s food for an entire year. Another supporter donated R1 000 to Gerry – who spent it on a second-hand dog kennel, dog shampoo, a brush and treats for Bella. After receiving a Shoprite voucher from another supporter, he used that to buy electricity as he was about to run out.

The love between Gerry and Bella inspired the hero within our supporters – thank you!
