The SPCA Mobile Clinics play a crucial role in fulfilling our promise to deliver essential care to those who need it the most. These mobile units travel to informal settlements and low-income areas around Cape Town to offer primary veterinary care and educate pet owners on responsible pet care practices.
The clinics provide essential services such as dipping, deworming and vaccinations. Pets that require sterilization or have illnesses or injuries are transported to our Animal Hospital for additional treatment and are returned to their owners once they have recovered.
Areas served:
Gugulethu, Langa, Parkwood, Brackenfell, Silversands, Pelican Park, Blackheath, Bayview, New Horizon, Bo-Kaap, Coniston Park, Kraaifontein, Kuilsriver, Parow West, Woodstock, Oceanview, Mandalay, Eerste Rivier, Steenberg, Strandfontein
The Mobile Clinic Program of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA is of vital importance as it provides both primary veterinary care and education on animal welfare to underprivileged communities in the Western Cape, such as Khayelitsha and Gugulethu. These areas often struggle with pet overpopulation, leading to higher rates of zoonotic diseases among children who may live near or share households with pets.
Our goal is to prevent common animal health issues, such as worm infestations and skin diseases, which can easily be transmitted to humans, in turn reducing the strain on community health centers.
If left untreated, diseases in animals can easily spread to humans, particularly to vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with HIV/AIDS and TB.
Furthermore, our Mobile Clinic Operators who speak multiple languages, encourage local residents to have their animals sterilised, as overpopulation of animals poses a significant problem in many communities. When animals are allowed to breed uncontrollably, it negatively impacts the health and well-being of both the animals and their owners.
The program is regularly evaluated and tracked through various methods. Our Mobile Clinic Operators keep record cards for every animal treated and collect data on clinic usage. They also keep track of specific services provided, such as:
These animal statistics are collected and tabulated on a monthly basis and analysed to ensure that usage of the SPCA Mobile Clinics is maximized, and where numbers drop off, action is taken to determine the reasons and acted upon.
The Mobile Clinics delivered primary veterinary care to 17 463 dogs and cats during the last financial year (out-patients and admissions)
