Fires! Wildlife Search, Rescue and Evacuations

Reading progress

Yesterday, Inspectors headed out to cover the Lourensford fire in Somerset West and to the fire in Rietvlei Nature Reserve in Parklands.

“We have been on the ground walking the affected areas since early morning and finished when the sun went down, looking for injured and displaced wild animals.”

Although not that many animals have been found as yet, we know they normally crawl out a few days after the fires to try and get food and water.

Many of them badly burnt on their feet and face burnt.

Lourensford Baboon Troop Spotted, Monitored

We also saw the Lourensford baboon troop. They all appeared to be okay but were evidently in distress. Between 20 to 30 baboons were seen.

Badly Burnt Porcupine

We were called about a badly burnt porcupine. Sadly this porcupine had to be humanely euthanased due to the severity of the injuries sustained. At least this poor creature is no longer suffering. All that would have happened is this poor porcupine would have died a slow and agonizing death as he was unable to eat or move to drinking water.

This morning, (Sunday) we are on our way to return to the affected areas in search of more animals.

Ways You Can Help

Contact us on behalf of animals in need

We are appealing to the public to keep an eye out and immediately contact the SPCA on (021) 700-4158/9 if any lost or injured animals are found.

We do not suggest the animals be handled as they will be in severe pain if burnt and can still be dangerous.

Make a donation

We are appealing to the public for financial donations to cover the costs of:
– Manpower
– Fuel
– Time
– Hospital
– Rehabilitation
– Re-release
– Humane euthanasia for animals with extraordinary suffering
